Who uses SSL Certificates?

Anyone transmitting sensitive information through their website should use SSL Certificates. Here are some types of organizations who use SSL.
Why use SSL?
Banks and Financial Institutions
Online Retailers
Government Organizations
Educational Institutions
Organizations hosting own websites and Intranets
Media and Telecommunications Companies
Hosting Companies
To secure online system logins, sensitive information transmitted via web forms, or protected areas of websites.
To secure webmail and applications like Outlook Web Access, Exchange and Office Communications Server.
To secure online credit card transactions.
To secure workflow and virtualization applications like Citrix Delivery Platforms or cloud based computing platforms.
To secure the connection between an email client such as Microsoft Outlook and an email server such as Microsoft Exchange.
To secure the transfer of files over https and FTP(s) services such as website owners updating new pages to their websites or transferring large files.
To secure hosting control panels logins and activity like Parallels, cPanel, and others.
To secure intranet based traffic such as internal networks, file sharing, extranets, and database connections.
To secure network logins and other network traffic with SSL VPNs such as VPN Access Servers or applications like the Citrix Access Gateway.
No matter what information is being submitted (i.e. via a form on your website to your server) you should be using SSL.  SSL is not just for securing credit card transactions.  All levels of personal information are sensitive and should be secured. From newsletter signups to account logins, SSL should be the minimum security standard when collecting and submitting data.
What are the types of SSL Certificates?
Over the last few years the number of organizations using SSL Certificates has increased dramatically.  The applications for which SSL is being used has also expanded.  For example:

Some organizations need SSL simply for confidentiality, e.g. encryption
• Some organizations wish to use SSL to enhance trust in their security and identity,
e.g. they want to show customers they have been vetted and are a legitimate
   organization

As the applications for SSL have started to become wider, three types of SSL Certificates have emerged:

3. Domain Validation: GlobalSign DomainSSL

DomainSSL Certificates are fully supported and share the same browser recognition with OrganizationSSL, but come with the advantage of being issued in only 5 minutes and without the need to submit company paperwork.  This makes DomainSSL ideal for businesses needing a low cost SSL quickly and without the effort of submitting company documents. 1. Extended Validation: GlobalSign ExtendedSSL

The latest, and possibly most significant, advancement in SSL technology since its initial inception follows the standardized Extended Validation guidelines.  New high security browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 7+, Opera 9.5+, Firefox 3+, Google Chrome,  Apple Safari 3.2+ and iPhone Safari 3.0+ identify ExtendedSSL Certificates as EV Certificates and activate the browser interface security enhancements, such as the Green Bar.  For customers who wish to assert the highest levels of authenticity, ExtendedSSL is the ideal solution.
