OVERVIEW OF SECURITY FEATURES |
 |
Anti virus checking for incoming and outgoing messages |
|
MERCUR Version 4.2 offers a built in anti-virus engine
utilizing the multi-awarded Norman Virus Control Scanning
Engine. This engine works with less system resources as the
known method with command line scanners. The virus
signatures are updated automatically over the internet.
Whenever a new message is received, the Norman Virus Control
engine will automatically locate virus infected
attachments. If a virus is found, the infected message part
will be removed or saved to quarantine directory. |
 |
Firewall |
|
A
built-in IP based firewall system protects your local mail
system from unwelcome intruders. You can grant and deny the
access to special IP-addresses and subnets. Incoming mail
can be parsed for unwanted originator addresses and then
rejected. The new mail storage system in MERCUR allows
message encryption for incoming and outgoing messages. |

Black List
|
| |
The Black List feature
allows you to create a list of special email addresses,
server names or IP-addresses to deny messages coming from
not allowed origins. Together with the regular firewall
option is this feature a suitable way to filter unwanted
bulk mails. |
 |
Check open relay database by using DNS suffix |
|
The Open Relay Database can be used by anyone in the
configuration of their own network or mail relay, toward the
goal of limiting theft of resources by spammers. By
accessing these open relay databases, system administrators
are allowed to choose to accept or deny email exchange with
servers at these addresses. |
 |
Anti-Spamming
|
| |
You can protect your mail
system against not allowed intruders and bulk mail senders,
using the detailed anti-spamming options. These options are
very important to decide who is allowed to use your server.
Server names, domains and email addresses of incoming
connections are checked by the system to find out what kind
of permissions need to be used.
Note: For a more advanced Anti-spam filter with Bayesian
and Content filtering, use Camelot Messaging Security which
is optimized to work with Mercur Mail server. |
 |
Attachment filtering for MIME encoded attachments |
|
The MIME Filtering feature is used to remove special
attachments, e.g. *.exe, *.vbs etc., from incoming email
messages, defined in a list of file masks. This feature
offers a usable extension to the anti-virus interface to
filter not virus infected but also dangerous executable
files. |
 |
Secured password authentication for SMTP, POP3 and IMAP4 |
|
MERCUR supports user password authentication for POP3
(RFC1734) and IMAP4 (RFC1731), as well as POP3-Login using
APOP. Furthermore you can use subnet- or domain
authentication for SMTP to RFC2554. Also POP3 before SMTP
is possible. MERCUR supports simple authentication via
PLAIN and LOGIN, or CRAM-MD5Mechanismus (Challenge-Response
Authentication Mechanism - Message Digest Version 5) to
RFC2195 as well as NTLM for Microsoft Outlook Express and
Outlook. |
