Norman ASA
Oslo, Norway, 15 March 2005
Norman Internet Control v5.8 available 2005/03/15 |
|
On
2005/03/15 Norman releases Norman Internet Control (NIC)
version 5.8. This product combines the award winning
Norman Virus Control with SandBox and Norman Personal
Firewall in one package to protect users from hackers,
viruses and several other types of malware.
Norman
Internet Control v5.8
For
existing users of Norman Internet Control, version 5.8
will be downloaded and installed automatically through
Internet Update. The update will require that the
computer is restarted to be effective.
NOTE: Do
not restart the computer before the installation
instructs you to. Depending on which version of NIC you
are upgrading from, you may have to restart the computer
two or three times to complete the upgrade. The
installation will always tell you explicitly when this
is necessary.
What’s
new in Norman Internet Control v5.8 NIC v5.8 includes
quite a few changes beneath the surface, especially in
the Norman Virus Control part of the product. In
addition to general improvements, this version also
serves the task of building a bridge between NIC version
5 and NIC version 6, which is due in the near future.
The Configuration Editor has been modified to reflect
the change from a module-based to a more
product-oriented interface using a configuration tree.
The NIC 5 modular orientation is not abandoned, but the
NIC v5.8 approach makes the configuration of Norman
Internet Control easier.
Those
with a detailed knowledge of earlier NIC versions will
notice that the file- and folder structure has changed.
In earlier versions all modules resided within the
...\Norman\Nvc\Bin folder. In Norman Internet Control
v5.8 all products and plug-ins have their own
%product%\bin folder. Common components reside within
...\Norman\Bin.
NIC v5.8
also has new naming conventions for the updates (zip
files) that are downloaded by Internet Update.
New
Internet Update functionality and new update dialogs
enable download of components seperatly, for example if
you want to download signature and scanner engine
updates, but don’t want to download new versions of
other components during regular updates.
New
quarantine, including a new file format for quarantined
files and more information columns in the user interface
for Quarantine. Access from the Utilities module.
NIC v5.8
introduces a closer integration between Norman Program
Manager (Zanda) and Internet Update (NIU). In addition,
the tray icon is now a part of Norman Program Manager.
It was formerly known by the process name Nymse.
